Hermann Seifried built Split Rock winery in the sunny region of Nelson in 1973 with the help of his local church. He'd only arrived in New Zealand three years earlier from Austria, via Germany (where he studied winemaking) and South Africa. 1976 was their first vintage and 35 years on the winemakers are Hermann’s son Chris and daughter Heidi. Having grown up on the estate, Heidi just can't keep away from the winery for long - despite being a dentist by day!
